Zug

Capital of the Swiss canton of the same name, situated on Lake Zug 24 km/15 mi south of Zürich, at the foot of the Zugerberg (height 1,991 m/6,532 ft); population (2000) 23,000. Zug has factories manufacturing electrical equipment, metal goods, and textiles. There are some 16th-century baroque buildings in the town.

Canton in central Switzerland, the smallest such administrative division in the country; area 239 sq km/92 sq mi; population (1999 est) 97,800. The southern and southeastern areas of Zug are mountainous. Lake Zug, with an area of 38 sq km/15 sq mi, lies partly in the canton and partly in Schwyz. Much fruit is grown, dairy farming is widespread, and industries include distilling and textile manufacture. Zug joined the Swiss Confederation in 1352.

The population is mainly German-speaking and Roman Catholic.
