Zabid

City in Yemen, on the Tihama coastal plain 80 km/50 mi southeast of Hodeidah; population (2001 est) 55,000. The capital of Yemen from the 13th to the 15th century, Zabid was of great importance in the Arab and Muslim world for many centuries because of its Islamic university. It is said to be the birthplace of algebra. Zabid is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
