Zagrosek, Lothar (1942– )

German conductor and composer. He studied in Vienna with Swarowsky, Karajan, and Maderna. Between 1967 and 1973 he held appointments in Salzburg, Kiel, and Darmstadt. From 1978 he often conducted the London Sinfonietta, with music by Ligeti, Messiaen, Weill, and Stravinsky; he was also a guest conductor with BBC Symphony Orchestra. He performed in the USA (at San Diego and Seattle), from 1984. He was music director at the Paris Opéra (1986–88), where he conducted the premiere of Höller's Der Meister und Margarita, in 1989. He made his Glyndebourne debut in 1987, with Così fan tutte; he conducted the English National Opera ensemble with The Magic Flute, in 1989. In 1988 he premiered the Křenek oratorio Symeon der Stylit, at Salzburg. He was music director of the Leipzig Opera from 1990.
