Zahlé

City in Lebanon, in the Bekaa valley, 40 km/25 mi east of Beirut; population (2001 est) 52,900. The city, one of the largest of the fertile Bekaa valley, is built on terraces at the foot of the eastern slopes of Mount Sannîn. It is an important centre for the farming, administration and trade of the Bekaa valley, where wheat, cotton, wine, and vegetables are produced, and is linked by rail and road to major cities of Lebanon and Syria.
