Zambales

Province of central Luzon Island in the Philippines; area 3,714 sq km/1,434 sq mi; population (1995) 569,000. The capital is Iba. The Zambales mountains cross the province, and arable land is severely limited. There are unexplored forest areas in the east. The chief crops are rice, coconuts, sugar, and tobacco. There are chromite mines in the province. Olongapo is the centre of trade and commerce, and the site of the former US naval base of Subic Bay.
