Zamboanga del Sur

Province of southwest Mindanao Island in the Philippines; area 9,922 sq km/ 3,831 sq mi; population (1995) 1,728,000. The capital is Pagadian. It is a very mountainous region, rising to 2,565 m/8,415ft, with very little coastal plain. The province contains Zamboanga, the regional capital.

Zamboanga del Sur contains San Ramon prison, 20 km/12 mi west of Zamboanga; handicrafts made by the prisoners are sold to tourists.
