Zamora

City and capital of the province of Zamora in Castilla-León autonomous community, northwest Spain, on the River Duero; population (2001) 64,800. Products include textiles, pottery, and wine. Zamora has a 12th-century Romanesque cathedral, a castle, and many old churches, walls, and houses.

Province of northwest Spain in Castilla-León autonomous community; area 10,559 sq km/4,077 sq mi; population (1991 est) 213,100. The River Duero and its tributaries flow through the province, and its western border is on the Portuguese frontier. The sheep raised here produce much of Spain's merino wool; it is also an important grain region. The capital is Zamora.
