Zancanaro, Giorgio (1939– )

Italian baritone. He made his debut at Milan in 1970, as Riccardo in I Puritani. He performed at Salzburg, in 1971 and Hamburg, in 1977 (as Luna). From 1981 he appeared at La Scala, Milan, as Ford in Falstaff, Luna, and William Tell. He made his New York debut at the Metropolitan Opera House in 1982, as Renato. His London debut was made in 1985 at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as Gerard in Andrea Chénier. He was noted for his forceful interpretations of such roles as Ezio in Attila (at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in 1990), Macbeth, Nabucco, and Posa.
