Azande

Member of a Sudanic-speaking people living in southwestern Sudan, northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), and southeastern Chad. The Azande state is an amalgam of many small groups of peoples who were subjugated by an invading aristocracy, the Avongara. Many were taken by Arab slave traders in the 19th century. They specialize in woodcarving and music.
