Zapolska, Gabriela (1857–1921)

Polish dramatist. She wrote novels, short stories, and theatre reviews, but is best known for her plays, which deliver sharp, comic invective against provincial middle-class hypocrisy. The tragi-farce Moralność pani Dulskiej/The Morality of Mrs Dulski (1907) is regarded as a classic of the Polish theatre.

Zapolska spent some years on the stage, and tried running a school of drama, before settling in Lvov (now Lviv, Ukraine) in 1904 and devoting herself to writing.
