Opera by Albert Lortzing (libretto by composer, based on a French play by A H J Mélesville, J T Merle and E Cantiran de Boirie), produced at Leipzig on 22 December 1837. In the story, Tsar Peter the Great is under disguise in a foreign shipyard. But he is confused with a deserter, Peter Ivanov, whom he befriends. See also Borgomastro di Saardam.
