Industrial town (lignite, woollen textiles) in Zielona Góra province, western Poland, 45 km/28 mi southwest of Zielona Góra; population (1990) 40,000. It had a medieval salt market. Until 1945 it was part of German Brandenburg; it was annexed to Saxony 1785 and to Prussia 1815.
