Zayas, Alfredo (1861–1934)

Cuban Liberal politician, president 1921–25. He served as vice president 1909–13 of the centrist Liberal Party under José Miguel Gómez, but in 1920 challenged him for the presidency after their relations had become strained. He won with the backing of Mario Menocal and his Conservative Party, although US intervention was necessary after claims of electoral rigging from Gómez. Beset by financial crisis, caused by a collapse in sugar prices, his government was criticized for indecisiveness and corruption.

In 1924 he left office with his personal wealth greatly increased and backed Gerardo Machado's successful bid for the presidency.

Zayas first became prominent as vice-presidential candidate of the newly formed Liberal Party in 1905, led by Gómez. Unsuccessful, he supported the 1906 Liberal rebellion that ousted President Tomás Estrada Palma and resulted in renewed US rule. As Liberal Party candidate in the presidential elections of 1912 and 1916, he was defeated by Menocal.
