Zelaya Rosales, José Manuel (1952– )

Honduras Liberal Party politician, president from 2006. Under his presidency, ties closened with Venezuela, governed by President Hugo Chavez, with the aim of getting access to cheap oil. This raised concerns in the USA.

Born into a landowning ranching family in Olancho department, he joined the Liberal Party in 1970 and carried on the family tradition in cattle ranching. He served as a deputy in the National Congress 1985–98.
