Zenta, Battle of

In the Ottoman Wars, Turkish defeat on 11 September 1679 by the Austrians under Prince Eugène of Savoy after which the Turks were finally expelled from Hungary. The battle took place just outside Zenta, Hungary (now Senta, in Serbia) 215 km/135 mi southeast of Budapest.

Eugène caught up with the Turkish Army as it was crossing the River Theiss by a temporary bridge and waited until the cavalry had reached the far side, then cut the bridge, isolating the Turkish infantry. His army then set about destroying the infantry, safe from interference by the Turkish horde. Turkish losses are said to have been about 30,000, while the Austrians lost only about 500.
