Zheng He

Also found in: Encyclopedia, Wikipedia 0.01 sec.

Zheng He (c.1371–1435)

Chinese admiral and emperor during the Ming dynasty. A Muslim court eunuch, he undertook maritime expeditions 1405–33 to India, the Gulf, and East Africa, demonstrating China's early command of the compass and shipbuilding techniques.

About 60 vessels were used in the first voyage, to India 1405–07, and Zheng undertook seven journeys in all, involving 28,000 persons. The expeditions ceased 1433, probably because of their expense and the Ming government's indifference to foreign trade.

Starting in 1405 the eunuch Admiral Zheng He led a series of seven voyages from the shores of the Ming empire into the South China Sea and Indian Ocean.
Admiral Zheng He and his fleet of 'treasure ships' embarked on 7 different expeditions that sailed further than any thought possible--and continued the journey for over 28 years.
But the copy of a map dated 1418 to be made public in Beijing on Monday and London a day later could show that it was in fact Admiral Zheng He who got there first, more than 70 years earlier.
