Zillig, Winfried

Zillig, Winfried (1905–1963)

German composer and conductor. He studied with Schoenberg in Vienna and from 1927 to 1928 was assistant to Kleiber at the Berlin Staatsoper. From 1928 to 1947 he conducted in various German theatres, becoming director of music at the radio station, first in Frankfurt and then in Hamburg. He also made a performing version of Schoenberg's unfinished oratorio Die Jakobsleiter (performed in Vienna, 1961).

Die Windesbraut (1941), Troilus und Cressida (1951), Das Opfer, TV opera Bauernpassion (1955), radio opera Die Verlobung von St Domingo (1956).

violin and cello concertos; four serenades for various instrumental groups; choral music; songs.
