jujube

Any of a group of trees belonging to the buckthorn family, with berrylike fruits. The common jujube (Z. jujuba) of Asia, Africa, and Australia, cultivated in southern Europe and California, has fruit the size of small plums, known as Chinese dates when preserved in syrup. See also lotus. (Genus Zizyphus, family Thamnaceae.)
