Zlatoust

Industrial city situated in the southern Ural Mountains in the Chelyabinsk oblast of the central Russian Federation; population (1990) 208,000. The city lies 110 km/68 mi west of Chelyabinsk. Products from here include cutlery and watches, and the manufacture of agricultural machinery and precision instruments.

Zlatoust was founded in 1754 as an iron- and copper-working settlement. It was destroyed in 1774 by a peasant uprising, but was rebuilt as an armaments centre from the time of Napoleon's invasion of Russia. From 1918–19, it was in the hands of the White Army.
