Zomba

Former capital of Malawi, 32 km/20 mi west of Lake Shirwa; population (1994 est) 62,700. The town lies in the Shire Highlands, where cotton is an important crop. Industries include cement, forestry, fishing, and food processing. It was replaced by Lilongwe as capital in 1975. Part of the University of Malawi is located here.

The town is the home of both the National Archives of Malawi and a campus of the University of Malawi, founded in 1964. The Zomba Plateau to the north is a popular summer resort and helped to attract European planters who founded the town in the 1880s. There are many tobacco estates in the vicinity.
