Zond

Series of seven Soviet interplanetary and lunar spacecraft launched 1964–70. Zond 1 and Zond 2 were sent towards Venus and Mars in 1964 but contact with the ships was lost. Zond 3 flew past the Moon in July 1965. Zond 5 (September 1968), Zond 6 (November 1968), Zond 7 (August 1969), and Zond 8 (October 1970) all went around the Moon and returned to Earth; they were later revealed to be modified Soyuz spacecraft being tested for a crewed flight to the Moon.
