Zorach, William

Zorach, William (1887–1966)

US sculptor and painter. Born in Eurburick-Kovno, Lithuania, his family emigrated in 1891 and settled in Cleveland, Ohio in 1894, where he was an apprentice to a lithographer. He moved to New York, New York, in 1907, attended the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design (1908–09), and, after study in France (1910–11), produced fauvist-style paintings. Based in New York, he focused on sculpture (1922), carving directly in stone and wood, as in Floating Figure (1922). He also taught at the Art Students League (1929–60) and wrote several books on sculpture.
