Zoraptera

Insect order comprising minute insects, maximum size 3 mm/0.1 in long, with no common name. The main food is fungal spores, but dead small arthropods are also taken. The animals generally occur under bark and in and under rotting wood. They are gregarious, but not truly social, and are found on all continents except Europe.

Classification

Zoraptera is in subclass Pterygota, class Insecta, phylum Arthropoda.

They are dimorphic in form, that is some have wings and some do not, in the same species. This is not a caste difference as each form contains sexually functional adults. The wings, when present, have reduced venation and are capable of being shed. The mouthparts are of the chewing type. The 22 known species are placed in a single genus, Zorotypus, in a single family Zorotypidae.
