Zuider Zee

Former sea inlet in the northwestern Netherlands, closed off from the North Sea by a 32-km/20-mi dyke in 1932; much of it has been reclaimed as land. The remaining lake is called the IJsselmeer.

Hot and cold smoked herring and mackerel are largely produced in Urk, a former island in the Zuiderzee (the current IJselmeer) that was linked to the continent after land was reclaimed from the sea following construction of the Enclosure Dam in 1932.
Other rivers and tributaries include IJssel and Zuiderzee, or the southern sea.
