Zukerman, Pinchas

Zukerman, Pinchas (1948– )

Israeli violinist, violist, and conductor. He studied at the Juilliard School, New York, and won the 1967 Leventritt Competition. In 1969 he appeared with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and at Brighton. He has given many performances of chamber music with Isaac Stern and Daniel Barenboim. In 1974 he made his debut as a conductor at London. He was music director of the St Paul Chamber Orchestra from 1980, and a guest conductor in New York, Los Angeles, and Boston. He became well known as a soloist in standard repertory, in particular for Elgar's violin concerto. In 1993 he was appointed principal guest conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.
