Zululand

Region in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, largely corresponding to the former Black National State KwaZulu. The Zulus formed a powerful kingdom in the early 19th century under Shaka (died 1828) and built up an empire in Natal, displacing other peoples of southern Africa. They were defeated by the British army at Ulundi in 1879. Zululand became part of the British colony of Natal in 1897.

Zululand's boundaries changed several times under the South African government's policy of apartheid.
