Zuppke, Bob

Zuppke, Bob (1879-1957)

US football coach. He coached the University of Illinois (1913-41) to four national championships and seven Western Conference titles. He developed many great players, including ‘Red’ Grange.

He was born in Berlin, Germany, and the Zuppke family immigrated to Milwaukee in 1881. Although he only played as a football substitute in high school and the University of Wisconsin, he became a successful high school coach.
