Zvenigorod

Town in the Moscow oblast (region) of the Russian Federation, on the Moskva River 53 km/33 mi west of Moscow; population (1990) 16,000. Industries in the town include the production of furniture, school stationery equipment, toys, and sports goods. Zvenigorod has a Savvino-Storozhevski monastic complex, which dates from the 15th to 17th centuries and contains a number of fine historical buildings.

Zvenigorod was first recorded in 1339 but archaeological surveys carried out in the 1940s and 1950s show that a settlement existed here from at least as early as the 12th century. The writer Anton Chekhov worked as a doctor here in 1887.
