Zweig, Fritz

    0.25 sec.

Zweig, Fritz (1893–1984)

Bohemian-born US conductor. After study with Schoenberg, he worked at opera houses in Mannheim and Elberfeld. In 1923 he moved to Berlin, working with Bruno Walter at the Städtische Oper. At the Kroll Opera (1927–31), he was Klemperer's assistant and gave operas by Gounod, Auber, and Gluck, as well as the first German performance of Janáček's From the House of the Dead. With the rise of the Nazis Zweig fled from one centre to another, working at the Berlin Staatsoper, the German Opera at Prague, and Paris. In 1938 he conducted Der Rosenkavalier in London, at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. He moved to the USA in 1940 and taught at Los Angeles.
