Zweig, Stefan

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.02 sec.

Zweig, Stefan (1881–1942)

Austrian writer. He was the author of plays, poems, and many biographies of writers (including Balzac and Dickens) and historical figures (including Marie Antoinette and Mary Stuart). He and his wife, exiles from the Nazis from 1934, despaired at what they saw as the end of civilization and culture and committed suicide in Brazil.

Zweig, Stefan (1881–1942)

Austrian novelist and dramatist. He collaborated with Strauss from 1932; Die schweigsame Frau was produced at Dresden (1935) but soon proscribed because of Zweig's Jewish ancestry. Zweig intended to write the libretto for Strauss's Friedenstag, suggested to him by Joseph Gregor, but because the Nazi régime made Zweig's appearance on any German stage impossible after 1935, this was afterwards undertaken by Gregor himself. See also Schweigsame Frau, Die (Richard Strauss); Toch (Heilige aus USA).
