Zwerg, Der

Opera in one act by Alexander von Zemlinsky (libretto by G C Klaren, after Wilde's The Birthday of the Infanta). Composed 1920–21, It was first performed in Cologne on 28 May 1922, conducted by Klemperer. The story concerns a Dwarf, given to the Spanish Infanta as a birthday present. She toys with him as he declares his love for her. When the Dwarf sees his reflection in a mirror he is horrified by his ugliness and dies of a broken heart.
