Zylis-Gara, Teresa (1935– )

Polish soprano. She studied at Łódź and sang Halka at Katowice, in 1956. From the early 1960s she appeared in West Germany as Poppea and Butterfly. In 1965 she appeared at Glyndebourne as Octavian. She sang in London at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden as Elvira and Violetta, in 1968 and 1976. Elvira was also the role of her debuts at Salzburg and the Metropolitan Opera House, New York (1968). She was widely admired as Anna Bolena, Fiordiligi, and the Marschallin. She sang Desdemona at Hamburg, in 1988.
