abaca

Fibre obtained from the sheathing leaf of Musa textilis, which grows in the Philippines. Naturally buoyant and resistant to sea water, it was widely used in the production of ships' ropes in the past.

In 1991, the Philippines produced 85,000 tonnes/83,657 tons of abaca; this constituted 0.32% of world fibre production.
