abatement

In heraldry, a mark of dishonour on a coat of arms, indicating some stain on the character of the wearer. This mark is mentioned in literature but has in practice scarcely been used, though the term is sometimes applied to marks of bastardy.

In English law, the discontinuance of, for example, a nuisance (see tort).
