acetanilide

C6H5NHCOCH3, a crystalline substance obtained from the reaction between aniline and anhydrous (water-free) ethanoic (acetic) acid. Acetanilide was introduced into medicine 1886 as an antipyretic (fever-reducing drug); it also has analgesic (pain-relieving) properties. Overdosage leads to methaemoglobinaemia and the less toxic paracetamol is now preferred.
