acid rock

acid rock

Igneous rock that contains more than 60% by weight silicon dioxide, SiO2, such as a granite or rhyolite. Along with the terms basic rock and ultrabasic rock it is part of an outdated classification system based on the erroneous belief that silicon in rocks is in the form of silicic acid. Geologists today are more likely to use the descriptive term felsic rock or report the amount of SiO2 in percentage by weight.
