Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Legal, Encyclopedia 0.01 sec.

actor

Performer who takes one or more role(s) in a play or film. In ancient Greece, the speaking actors were distinguished from the chorus, whereas in ancient Indian and in medieval Japanese drama, singing and dance or stylized movement characterized the performers. Body and (in unmasked drama) facial mobility, vocal control, and an ability to portray character and emotional states are skills that have been held in common by actors throughout the ages.

Actor

In Greek mythology, son of Deion or Myrmidon, and grandfather of Patroclus, whose descendants were called Actorides.

Polls show that voters find Brown sincere and honest - in an implied contrast with the actorish Blair - and yet the previous prime minister's persona scarcely changed across 13 years of leading party and country, whereas the current PM, compared to his glowering chancellorship, looks like an emergency construct: new clothes, hair and voice, like the makeover scene in Evita.
Among the large supporting cast members, James Carville, the liberal media spokesman and the brains behind Bill Clinton’s two victorious presidential elections, startled me at first in the role of Missouri’s Governor Crittenden, the mortal enemy of Jesse James, but I was quickly won over by his unquiveringly straight-faced actorish zeal.
I was less convinced by Orlando Bloom who, like Brad, seems a little overawed with the rather formal and stilted actorish dialogue.
