| Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare malignant tumor that is well known for its deceptively encouraging 5-year survival rate and its dismal survival rate at longer intervals. Adenoid cystic carcinoma was first reported in the salivary gland by Billroth (4) in 1859; he described a tumor with cribriform, glandular, and basaloid patterns containing mucous material. Pleomorphic adenoma of the trachea, like adenoid cystic carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma, has a less aggressive clinical course than does squamous cell carcinoma. |
