ADPAbbreviation for adenosine diphosphate, the chemical product formed in cells when ATP breaks down to release energy. ADP can be converted back into ATP by an enzyme called ATP synthase. Like other phosphonucleotides (such as ATP, cAMP, GTP), ADP also has regulatory and signalling functions, that is certain proteins and enzymes behave differently when they have a molecule of ADP bound, compared with the ATP-bound or empty state.
