Waxlike substance produced by the exposure of fleshy tissue to moisture with the exclusion of air, as in the earth or under water. Human bodies in moist burial places often undergo this change.

Adipocere refers to a fatty wax substance that forms on bodies either submerged in water or buried in damp conditions without oxygen and air.
That body cavity was surrounded by a thick layer of adipocere, a hard, grainy substance commonly known as grave wax.
