adipose tissue |
Also found in: Dictionary/thesaurus, Medical, Encyclopedia, Wikipedia | 0.02 sec. |
adipose tissueType of connective tissue of vertebrates that serves as an energy reserve, and also pads some organs. It is commonly called fat tissue, and consists of large spherical cells filled with fat. In mammals, major layers are in the inner layer of skin and around the kidneys and heart. Fatty acids are transported to and from it via the blood system. An excessive amount of adipose tissue is developed in the course of some disorders, especially obesity. Visceral adiposity may represent an effort to retain fat within
adipocytes, rather than permit fatty acids and triglycerides to
accumulate in energetic tissues such as muscle and liver, as well as in
triglyceride-rich lipoproteins. The link between
TV and adiposity (fatness) is well documented, and trifold: If
you're watching TV, you're inactive--kids burn less calories
watching TV than doing just about anything else; if you're watching
TV, you're being bombarded with food messages; and if you're
watching TV, you're likely to snack. The Adult Figure Instrument (AFI; Collins, 1991) is comprised of
seven adult male images that increase in adiposity from the first figure
to the seventh figure. |
