admiral butterflyAny of several species of butterfly in the same family (Nymphalidae) as the tortoiseshells. The best-known is the red admiral (Vanessa atalanta), found worldwide in the northern hemisphere. It has black wings crossed by scarlet bands and marked with white and blue spots, and spanning 6 cm/2.5 in. It either hibernates, or migrates south each year from northern areas to subtropical zones.
