agroforestry

Agricultural system which involves planting and maintaining trees on land where crops and animals are also raised. The trees may be used for timber, fuel, food, or animal fodder. Trees may be interplanted with other crops in order to provide shade, reduce soil erosion, and increase moisture retention in the soil. Leaves dropped by the trees also improve the fertility of the soil.
