avocado

Tree belonging to the laurel family, native to Central America. Its dark-green, thick-skinned, pear-shaped fruit has buttery-textured flesh and is used in salads. (Persea americana, family Lauraceae.)

US researchers identified in 1998 three compounds in unripe avocados that are effective against cancer cells and also act as pesticides.
