al-Hakam II (died 976)

Caliph of Córdoba 961–76. He won many victories against the Christians and extended the influence of Islam.

Son of Abd ar-Rahmān III (also known as an-Nāsir), al-Hakam adopted the caliphal title of al-Mustansir. His reign was free of internal strife. He defeated Norman attacks in 966 and 971, and continued wars against Christian Spain and the Fātimid dynasty in the Maghrib, the Islamic area of northwestern Africa.
