alcoholometry

Determination of the proportion of alcohol in a liquid, using a specially calibrated hydrometer.

Sikes's hydrometer is used for determining the strength of spirits, and Atkins's has a series of scales for any ‘wort’, or beer in the making.

If the liquid contains only alcohol and water, its relative density as shown by a hydrometer enables the relative proportions to be known, and hydrometers for this purpose are often marked in percentage of alcohol instead of relative density.
