ale conner (or ale kenner)

One who knows what good ale is. In medieval times ale conners or ale tasters (called gustatores cervisiae) were appointed annually in the court-leet of each manor, in boroughs, and in corporate towns, to see that the ale was good, and that it was sold at proper prices.

In the City of London four were appointed every year, but the office is now a sinecure.
