alehouse

Formerly a house, or tavern, where ale was sold.

In 1496 an act passed against ‘vacabounds and beggers’ contained a clause regulating alehouses, and various acts were subsequently passed for that purpose. In 1828 a general act to regulate the granting of alehouse licences was passed, which repealed all former statutes on this subject.
