alignment

In archaeology, a term used to denote lines of standing stones. Many of these are associated with burial chambers and cairns, while others are associated with stone circles. Megalithic alignments, or avenues, in Britain date from the Bronze Age.

It has been suggested that some of these megalithic standing stones or alignments were set up and used for making astronomical observations, but this remains a subject for debate since it assumes a far more advanced mathematical and scientific knowledge among prehistoric insular peoples than previously considered possible.
