alkaline-earth metalAny of a group of six metallic elements with similar bonding properties: beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, and radium. They form a linked group in the periodic table of the elements. They are strongly basic, bivalent (have a valency of two), and occur in nature only in compounds. Pennsylvania is planning to
construct 10 bridges along Interstate 99 using concrete mixtures
containing industrial byproducts such as fly ash, silica fume, ground
granulated blast furnace slag and an alkaline earth mineral admixture. The mystery element is an alkaline earth metal, or one of a group
of elements that is highly reactive in nature. This may reflect the concentration
of alkaline earth metals (Ca, Sr) in soil and groundwater as is typical
in dry climates. |
